Our
weather station, here in Fife, Scotland, reported a total of 239.1mm of rain
for January and February combined; twice the historic average for those two
months. The first five days of January where rain-free, and the remainder of
January plus February had only seven rain-free days! The rest of the year,
except for June, has been below average rainfall, and consequentially the
average across 2026 has been largely in line with the historic average.
It
was only June 2026 where the actual rainfall matched the historic average for
the month. All other months (with the exception of January and February,
discussed above) were well below historic average.
One
exceptional weather event took place on 14th August 2025. Starting
at 4.20pm, a torrential hailstorm began before turning quickly to intense rain
reaching a peak of 52.8mm per hour, finally depositing 63mm of rain. This is
equal to all of the rain that August normally produces compressed into less
than one hour. The rainfall is by far the most intense in the 20 years we’ve
lived in Fife: the cottage guttering was completely overwhelmed and the brae
became a raging torrent.
Tonga Eruption 15
January 2022
Our
weather station detected the pressure pulse from the eruption of the Tonga
volcano. Arriving here in Fife, Scotland, approximately 14.5 hours after the
explosion, and luckily during a period of reducing trend in local atmospheric
pressure, the pulse of over-pressure measuring ~1hPa is clearly seen in the
chart above.
