Desperate to see the Northern Lights, we booked a holiday to
Lapland. We spent a week at the Muotkanmaja
Wilderness Lodge. We recommend this hotel highly: staff, accommodation, the
food, the range of activities and the enthusiastic guides were something
special.
There is no shortage of snow this far north!
And the temperatures, well that's to be experienced: most of the
week 30 degrees below freezing!
On arrival at the lodge you are fitted out with a polar suit, and
you absolutely need it!
Not many hills hereabouts, and what hills there are don't mount too
much
Life at 30-below has strange
consequences; your own breath freezes instantly!

We did some X-country skiing and
snow shoeing

We drove skidoos

We drove dogsleds

And reindeer sleds.
And we did indeed see the Northern Lights, but only on one night
was it truly spectacular. With the simple cameras we had this is the best image
we captured. In fact one-half of the sky was filled with curtains of colour.
Even the hotel staff ventured out in the cold to see this show - and they
claimed it was the best of the season so far. We were very lucky!
